A short 0.1-mile walk to stunning overlook with views from Boulder plains to Rocky Mountain National Park. Perfect sunset spot on Flagstaff Mountain.
A short drive up the very steep Flagstaff Mountain brings you to incredible views spanning from the eastern plains to the jagged, snow-capped peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park. Lost Gulch Overlook offers one of the most accessible and rewarding viewpoints in the Boulder area with minimal hiking required.
Overlook Stats:
Directions from Boulder: Drive west on Baseline Road and continue up Flagstaff Mountain for about 5.5 miles past the Flagstaff Summit (Realization Point) pulloff. After navigating some more steep and very tight switchbacks, you'll find a dirt parking lot on the north side of the road.
Driving Notes:
From the parking area, you have two excellent options:
Option 1: Northwest to Cliff Overlook (Recommended for Views) Head northwest towards the dramatic cliff overlook for panoramic mountain views. From the Lost Gulch Overlook cliff top, you can see all the way past Nederland into the Indian Peaks Wilderness and Rocky Mountain National Park.
Option 2: East to Picnic Area Walk east towards a nicely wooded area with picnic tables and a great view over the plains and downtown Boulder. This is perfect for a peaceful meal with a view.
Trail Notes: The walk is less than 0.1 miles, but it does cover some very uneven ground and steep rocks. Please take care and bring appropriate traction devices in the winter.
