About this place

Added by Lucas Bremer

360 degree views at the top of the world.

California Pass’s summit is a jaw dropping 12,960 feet above sea level. A long way from the valley floor, California Gulch, but, as drivers start their trek, the valley floor starts to shrink and gives way to steep climbs and switchbacks. Off road vehicles are needed to reach the top, and drivers begin to climb up and above tree level with rocky mountainsides and seemingly endless elevation gain. Once at the top, however, adventure-seekers are rewarded with surreal views of surrounding peaks in all directions as well as the valley below.

Be sure to hike up to the top of the mountain from California Pass’s summit elevation sign (the trail is easily seen). The views are amazing, but the weather can change quickly. Like most roads in the San Juan range, this road is subject to extreme blizzards and could be closed at anytime.
