About this place

Added by Jenna Mulligan

This web of short but technical biking trails leads up Animas Mountain for scenic overlooks of the town and nearby Junction Creek valley.

The Dalla Park shares a trailhead and parking lot with the Animas Mountain trail, frequently used for hiking and trail running. There is plenty of room in this lot, as well as several picnic tables.

Immediately after crossing through the gate, the trail divides. The bike park takes up the south and south-eastern faces of the hill, but it's best to climb up the more moderate grade of the switchbacks. Therefore, stay right at the first Y. Beyond this, there will be several hikers as well as tree roots to look out for in the ascent.

After another half mile, you'll reach another Y with rock walls surrounding. This time, bear left. You'll soon reach a trail convergence with a sign at the center. Keep pedaling uphill until you reach a ridge line, with beautiful views of the foothills on Durango's western edge.

This trail proceeds towards a bouldering zone off Junction Creek. Complete the loop at Sailing Hawks, which crosses into protected land that is off-limits during the spring for deer and elk habitat.

The best part of the ride is the steep cruise back down! Stay on the most southern trail, and the last quarter mile is a very steep, very rocky pitch known as Jacob's Ladder.
