Hike the Black Powder Trail

The Gateway Natural Area, part of the City of Fort Collins public lands system, is a wonderful (and close to the city) place to begin exploring the many outdoor assets and activities found in the greater Fort Collins area.

The Black Powder Trail is a relatively easy, well-marked 1.5 mile out and back and leads to an absolutely fantastic view over the Poudre River Canyon. It is excellent for both hiking *and* trail running, particularly if you are working on your interval training. In spring the wildflowers are gorgeous.

The trail can be a muddy mess after a snow or rain, so prepare accordingly.

To get there take Highway 287 north out of Fort Collins approximately 10 miles and go left onto Highway 14 into Poudre Canyon for 5 miles. The Gateway Natural Area is well-marked and the Black Powder Trail begins at the northeast end of the parking area and immediately crosses the Poudre.
