Explore Gyantse's 14th-century streets and learn how this place went from being Tibet's third-largest city to a small, laid-back town.
The starting location of this adventure is set at the city's largest hotel, aptly named Gyantse Hotel. All of the streets surrounding the hotel are flat and cobblestoned, with little traffic or danger, and should be comfortable for all types of travelers.
Head right out of the entrance of the hotel to reach the main downtown area. The shops and restaurants downtown will be littered with unique Buddhist relics and rich-smelling tsampa, which you should absolutely indulge in. Almost anywhere in the city, you should be able to see the Pelkor Chode Monastery and Zhongshan Kangying Relic Site looming off to the northwest, overlooking everything. Head for these hills, and you'll find the landscape slowly changing as city gives way to suburbs and the 14th-century architecture that still remains there today.
