Snowshoe to Rummel Lake and Pass

The trailhead to Rummel Lake/Pass is off of Kananaskis Trail (Smith Dorrien Trail) directly across from the turn to Mt. Shark at the south end of Spray Lakes - it will likely be marked by cars attempting the same trail. The trail is well packed and snowshoes aren't even necessary until after Rummel Lake.

The main trail meanders through the montane forest by a series of switchbacks as well as steady elevation gain. It's a real treat for anybody who enjoys not knowing what's around the corner because you rarely see farther than 50 feet in front of you! The trail is straightforward on the way up; however, on the way down adventure lies in forks and shortcuts that a keen eye will notice - but be warned, they are usually significantly steeper and shouldn't really be attempted without proper footwear and hiking poles.

Rummel Lake is the perfect place to have a snack or stop for a meal and admire your surroundings. It's nestled beneath Mount Galatea that stands at 3185 m: a perfect place to take in the grandeur of the Rockies.

Continuing past Rummel Lake is not for beginners. Deep powder, steep gradients, and potential for avalanches await those who venture on. It's best to move into the forest to loosely follow the drainage channel of Rummel Creek into the pass. Once out of the trees, you can't miss the pass. If avalanche conditions permit, continue into the pass until your heart's content to view the peaks that lie beyond.
