Peche Island is a Canadian owned island in the Detroit River. This fun, quick getaway is only a twenty minute paddle from shore with access to walking trails, beach, swimming hole, beautiful channels to explore with local wildlife to enjoy and photograph.
Peche Island, a 100-acre island was purchased by Hiram Walker in 1883. Walker used the island for a summer place, and his buildings included a stable, large home, greenhouse, and icehouse. The property was sold in 1907. The City of Windsor acquired the land from the Province of Ontario in 1999. It is now a naturalized park with walking trails and can be accessed by boat. The Saint Lawrence Seaway passes 200 yards (183 m) off its western shore and daily 1,000-foot-long (300 m) ships pass. It is 1.2 miles (1.9 km) east of U. S.-owned Belle Isle, and 360yards (330 m) from the Windsor shore.
There is a central marsh on the island with man-made channels cut through the island to ensure fresh water supply and recreational opportunities. There is still plenty of active wildlife throughout the island to enjoy and observe. There are walking trails, docking area for boats, a beach to enjoy, picnic areas with tables, fire pits, but no over night camping is allowed.
Windsor Adventure operates a rental excursion company across from the Island. You can rent kayaks or stand up paddle boards for the day to enjoy the island. Windsor Adventure also has tours with a local guide available to give you an in depth look of the island and its history.
Free Parking access on Riverside Drive across from Sandpoint Beach. A local ice cream shop and convenience store is directly across from the Windsor Adventure site, you can't miss it!
