Kayak the Miller Islet

The coast of British Columbia defies description. It is a wonderland of natural treasures both living and geological, and the vast majority of it is only accessible by water or seaplane.

The Miller Islet at the entrance to the glacier-carved Jervis Inlet is both a harbor seal and seabird colony and a fantastic way to get a taste of the Sunset Coast.

To get there make your way to the hamlet of Egmont and procure yourself a kayak or two. From there head northwest across the Narrows, past the Sutton Islets and then north towards the Jervis Inlet. As you round the point on your right (east) past the Islets, Miller Islet will come into view and is slightly over a mile more to go.

From Egmont the trip is roughly 5.5 miles round trip, depending on your route.

The Islet is home to a colony of harbor seals and must be given wide birth if they are present, especially during the crucial pupping season. If you get too close they will panic and dive back into the water.

That said the inlet and Islet is home to several dozen seals and many are curious and will likely follow you as you kayak around.

Note that the best times to go are during the summer and early fall months, when the weather is best and the seas are calm. It is also best to go with the tide, making your journey easier.
