"The Towers" is a nice scramble east of Mount Assiniboine. You are actually climbing up big towers made of rock and you get the same views of the back side of Mount Assiniboine as if you were on a helicopter tour....but from higher up!
From the Assiniboine Lodge (or your campsite or your hut), follow directions to Wonder Pass. After the pass, there are two ways to get up to The Towers, which you can see on the map in the pictures. The first option is to keep going on Wonder Pass Trail a bit further, lose some elevation and cut through the forest using an established trail that takes you around the mountain to the west side bowl. From there, you have to pick a straight line up to the ridge. We noticed a series of white-painted rocks on our way up. The second option is shorter but not as obvious. After the pass, get off trail to your right and go up the boulder field at the base of the east face of The Towers. You will pick up the trail to the ridge from there.
Beware that you are in bear country and encounters with Grizzlies are not uncommon.
Once up on the ridge is where the scrambling starts. For the next hour or so, you will be guided by cairns as you find your way up the highest tower. Many of the holds you will grab will be loose. It is recommended to wear a helmet, stay close together and pay attention to parties ahead of you and potential rock fall.
Shortly after you will reap the rewards of your efforts, with a direct view of surrounding peaks, the beautiful valley and turquoise lakes below. The Towers stand at an elevation of 2846m (9340ft). Stay safe and have fun!
