Hike to Mt Rohr

The Duffy Lake Road area is a scrambling paradise. If you love exploring the alpine off trail, this would be the place.

Mt Rohr is a prominent peak, located just above Duffy Lake. One of the highlights of this trip is that you get to hike directly beside the incredible glaciers of Joffre Peak, as it is the next summit over. The deep turquoise Rohr Lake has some great tent sites and swimming spots if you want to spend a few days exploring the area.

Marriot Basin Rd (unmarked) is just south of the salt shed, at the high point of the Duffy Lake Road. Driving north on HWY 99 from Whistler/Pemberton, the gravel road is 26km from the village of Mt Currie. With a 2WD vehicle, park at the bottom of this road wherever you can find space. With a 4WD high clearance vehicle you can drive all the way to the end of the road, where the trail starts.

The route to Mt Rohr shares the first part of the trail with Marriot Basin and access to the Wendy Thompson hut. At a fork you’ll see two rustic wooden signs - Aspen to the left, and Rohr to the right. Follow the well worn trail up through giant mud puddles and beautiful forest to Rohr Lake, then continue to the left of the lake along a trail that takes you into the alpine. The lake is a fantastic destination if you’re not comfortable being off trail. Those with route finding skills can make their way up the valley following cairns all the way to the summit of Mt Rohr. The easiest route follows the looker’s right when heading up the basin.

The route is mostly hiking, with a few sections of easy to moderate scrambling on scree. At the summit you’ll be treated to outstanding views of the Joffre group, and a 360 view of the surrounding peaks and alpine lakes.
