About this place

Added by Elliott Kramer

Hike to an absolutely beautiful alpine bowl with spectacularly emerald lakes. Extend to the summit of a nearby peak, or enjoy the beauty of the bowl.

The Lyle Lakes hike starts with the access - as most do in the Kootenays it requires finding the trailhead! Turn off HWY 31A onto Rossiter Road, about 24km's from Kaslo and 23Km from New Denver. Here, follow the main route on the forestry roads for 7km to the trailhead, noting to bear left at 5.9km up the road. Park at the switchback at 7km - from here your trail starts.

Follow the trail up to another road, which you then take left down to the creek valley. Once you reach the creek valley a trail will begin its journey up through some beautiful forest to an old mining road. Once this has been reached, follow this up into the first basin, which has a beautiful waterfall cascading down its side coming from Lyle Lakes.

The trail starts to seriously ascend after this first basin. Follow the trail that heads straight up the valley to lookers left. After quite a few switchbacks, a bit of sweat and a few drinksbreaks, you will reach Lyle Lakes basin!

Stop to enjoy the scenery and have a look around - its beautiful up in this basin, which has some of the most spectacularly coloured lakes in the Kootenays. Also keep an eye out for Bears, we spotted a lone Grizzly while here so definitely make some noise, travel in a group and bring Bear Spray!

If you're feeling more adventurous - continue up this hike to the summit of Mt Brennan - a huge day trip or more popular overnight trip.
