The High Lake Trail leads into a remote hike-in access only lake correspondingly named High Lake. There's a great warm-up shelter where you can have a cookout or enjoy the view. The lake is a spectacular example of near-untouched precambrian rock wilds of the Canadian shield.
Start at the Falcon Trails Resort main lodge and head out on the well marked trail. It winds up around behind the little ski hill there and heads south east out towards High Lake on an easy to follow, double track gravel trail. There is the odd kubota (resort utility vehicle) traffic by staff, but they are very friendly and happy to see anyone out using the trail.
You will adventure through jackpine forests (left over from a forest fire in the area 30 years ago), black spruce swamps, and beautiful juniper ridges.
After about 30 minutes of walking you will veer off to the darling little warm up shack, which is up on a cliff looking out over High Lake. It was built about 20 years ago by the local ski club. There is a fireplace inside in case you want to have a little cookout.
If you continue along the trail you will eventually make it to the lake and to the eco cabins that the resort (Falcon Trails) rents (you can learn more about them at: http://falcontrailsresort.com/...).
You have the option of turning back, or connecting to the new Trans Canada Trail which will eventually bring you back to your car.
