About this place

Added by Jonathan Sinclair

Remote wilderness park containing Alberta's tallest waterfall at 30 meters high. 20 km off-road 4x. 4 trail is the only way to access the park. Generally not very busy due to remoteness. Duration: a full day or overnight if you're camping.

Kakwa Wildland Park is 160 kilometres southwest of Grande Prairie. For travel beyond Lick Creek (roughly 10 kilometres from the park’s northern boundary) a four-wheel drive vehicle is essential. The trail to Kakwa Falls is 20km in length, and takes approximately 1.5 hours one-way if driving a 4x4 pickup truck, however off road vehicles (ATVs/UTVs) will be faster. The trail crosses several rivers and creeks, steep rocky hills, and narrow areas. The falls are only accessible by pickup trucks in late summer/fall as the water levels will be receded allowing for easier river crossings.

At the end of the off-road trail, you will arrive at the Day Use Area. From there, there is a hiking trail that leads to the falls viewpoint. The hike is fairly easy and flat, and is approximately 1.5kms long. Once at the falls viewpoint, if you are feeling adventurous, there is a very steep trail located just south of the viewpoint that leads you down to the bottom of the falls, but warning! this trail is very steep and you need to use the ropes installed to get down and back up. At the bottom, you can walk right behind the waterfall for a unique perspective, but be careful as the rocks are very slippery.
