Canoe and Camp on Dogtooth Lake

Located just East of Kenora, ON, Eagle-Dogtooth Provincial Park contains several peaceful lakes the makes the perfect setting to get away from society.  If approaching from the West on the Trans Canada Highway, take the exit right for Highway 71 to Fort Frances after passing Kenora.  If coming from the East, exit left onto the same highway before you get to Kenora, if you have reached the 17A bypass, you have gone too far.

Where you want to start you trip is entirely up to you.  You can launch your canoe at Rushing River campground onto Dogtooth Lake.  Our group went to Luther Village at the South End of the Dogtooth Lake on Echo Bay, the exit is further south on Highway 71 than Rushing River.  Depending on the time of year, you can rent canoes from Luther Village and park your car at their camp for a fee, a good option if you don't have a canoe or don't have the means to transport one. 

Before embarking on your Canoe Trip, it is absolutely essential that you plan out where you want to camp each night (a map is pictured above).  Our group embarked on a three-night trip.  Our first night was spent at Blueberry Bay, which is a 1-1.5 hour paddle from Echo Bay.  At the very end of Blueberry Bay in the back right corner as you approach, there is a very nice camping area used by scout troops.  It has a fire pit and plenty of open space to pitch one or several tents.  The site is insulated from the lake by trees and located about 20m from the shore.  Three is a large downed tree that juts out over the lake from the path that leads to the site.

Another spot on Dogtooth is located on an island in Echo Bay itself, this is a great option if you only want to go for one night and want to spend your day fishing for Walleye to cook up by the fire.  The island is located towards the Northwestern part of Echo bay and can be seen from Luther Village.  There are several spots to pitch a tent and a fire pit.  Despite being an island, it is semi protected and offers a great chance to chill out on a hot summer day.

The sites listed above are merely recommendations, there are several fantastic islands and on-shore sites on Dogtooth Lake and I highly recommend creating your own adventure!  Be sure to always pack out what you pack in and respect the environment!  Dogtooth is a beautiful lake with crystal clear water, let's do our best to keep it that way.
