Lowell Lake boasts endless amounts of rugged beauty--from glacial activity and silt beaches to waterfalls and wildlife viewing. There are small bodies of water and trail access from camp as well, making it the perfect place to rest, stretch your legs, and shower off after a day of rafting on the Alsek River.
Lake Lowell, located in the Yukon's Kluane National Park, is fed by the Alsek River and the lake's namesake glacier, which borders the western shore. When the weather permits, you can see Lowell Glacier and glistening icebergs floating through the lake. There is access to a ridge hike (intermediate difficulty for elevation and technical skill) from camp that overlooks the lake and gives way to stunning views of the glacier. Additionally, you'll find an abundance of fresh water swimming holes just inland of the lake shore, set in front of small waterfalls and, in the right season, seas of wildflowers. While camping at Lake Lowell, it's possible to see a variety of wildlife, including birds, moose, wolverines, and brown bear. It's truly a magical place!
That said, Lake Lowell is not an easy place to access. The weather in this remote and mountainous area of the Yukon can shift dramatically, and the campsite itself is accessible only by raft or kayak while paddling the Alsek River, for which you need permits from multiple park entities. If you do find yourself at Lake Lowell, there is ample space for setting up group camps in any season.
