Backpack the Coastal Hiking Trail in Pukaskwa NP

Pukuskwa Canadian National Park is located near the town of Marathon in northern Ontario. The only road to access the park is at the north end near Hattie Cove. The park is home to the Coastal Hiking Trail as well as a paddling route and other various water activities. All trails are open May 1st - September 30th.

The Coastal Hiking Trail starts near the Visitor Center at Hattie Cove. The entire trail is about 60 km, but there are many different campsites you stay at to the make the trip as long or as short as you want!

With three kids (ages 10, 8, 5) we chose to hike to Playter Harbour, only 4.5 km from the visitor center. We were even able to leave our Airstream trailer parked in the lot overnight with no problems.

After we had checked in with the ranger and were geared up, we set out at about 4pm. It took us about 2 hours to hike to the campsite over fairly mild terrain. There were plenty of tree roots and rocks to scramble over, but overall the trail was well-defined and easy to follow.

Playter Harbour is tucked back away from the trail in a small outcropping of rocks right on one of the bays of Lake Superior. There is a fire ring, amazing views, a great swimming hole, bear box, and a pit toilet.

This spot is unique in that you can see both sunrise sunset, so don't forget your camera!
