Explore the Prairie Creek Redwoods

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is located in Orick, CA about 50 miles North of Eureka, Ca and 25 miles South of Crescent City, CA. Take the Newton B Drury Scenic Parkway exit off of Highway 101. Along this road there is a prairie where wild Roosevelt Elk can be spotted. They are wild so keep your distance. About 1 mile up the road there is the Prairie Creek Campground on the left hand side.

In the same area are Prairie Creek Trail and Elk Prairie Trail, which are each a 4.3 and 1.3 mile trails respectively. About 1/2 mile North of the campground is Big Tree Trail, which is only 0.3 miles, but here you can view one of the tallest trees in the world.

Before you hit the Big Tree Trail, look out for Cal Barrel Road, which is one of the most beautiful, scenic dirt road drives you will ever take. The Redwoods in this area are majestic. Be sure to check the Park Service to see if the road is open as it is closed during the Winter and after inclement weather. While you are near the entrance to Cal Barrel road, park alongside the road and do the Cathedral Trees Trail, its a 1.4 mile moderate hike but you won't regret it. The views are incredible. Bring your camera, it's ferns galore in this area. Be prepared for wildlife encounters and know what to do if you do. Check the National Park Service for tips on this.
