Relative solitude and breathtaking views of the Santa Maria Valley & The Foxen Canyon viticultural areas, made famous by the film Sideways.
Foxen Canyon Road from Santa Maria to Los Olivos runs through some of the most beautiful wine country in Santa Barbara county so much so that it was centerpiece of the film Sideways.
The road itself begins at the intersection of Betteravia and Philbric roads just east of Santa Maria and proceeds for roughly 30 miles southeast through Santa Maria Valley before turning south into Foxen Canyon itself and ending in Los Olivos.
It is often done as a loop, going right at 154 in Los Olivos and then north on Zaca Station Road until it turns back into Foxen Canyon.
As small alternative the Santa Maria Mesa road runs for several miles along the northeast side of the Santa Maria Valley past the famous Cambria and clv wineries.
There are numerous vineyards along the way worth visiting with food available, making for an excellent day of cycling.
