A short but scenic high altitude summer hike on the Stubai Glacier

This short hike is a great mini tour when you want to get up high without a whole lot of effort but enjoy some stunning glacier views.

The hike to the Hildersheimer Hut is a high altitude tour on the Stubai glacier, that if done during the summer months from the top station of the Schaufeljochbahn doesn't require any technical glacier crossing equipment.

Park at the bottom of the Stubai Glacier car park and buy a lift ticket that takes you all the way to the top (Top of Tyrol). At the very top of the Schaufeljochbahn (3111m), exit the lift station to the left. There's a trail that goes straight ahead up to a small mountain chapel and the Schaufelspitze but you want to bend off to the right and head down to the snow where you'll see wooden posts marking a trail across the glacier. The trail goes slightly downhill to start, but then is mostly flat for the rest of the way.

At the other side, you'll need to scramble over some boulders to reach the trail to the Hildersheimer Hut. This trail follows a ridge line all the way out to the hut, with a few bits of the trail with some bolted cables for extra security.

During the summer months the hut is open for overnight stays as well as day visitors who just want to call in for a quick drink and a snack (link we did) and then turn around and hike back again. It's a great base if you're looking to do a longer tour in the area, such as the Zuckerhütl summit. There's also a via ferrata just across from the hut. You can find more info about the hut here: https://www.hildesheimerhuette...
