Catch the Sunrise at Kanangra Walls

The Drive

Kanangra Walls is a 220km drive from Sydney. Expect to take 3 1/2 hours + add some time for a pit stop.

The easiest way to navigate here is to use your GPS and head for Boyd River Campground. This will take you along the Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains til you reach the Jenolan Caves turnoff. The road is steep and windy down to Jenolan Caves, but is well worth the views and fresh air. Pass through the caves and continue back up the steep and windy road. Shortly after reaching the top you will come to a left turn, and the entrance to Kanangra-Boyd National Park.

The road is unsealed from here on in and it's about a 30km drive to reach the walls. Your average car will get you there, but keep in mind there are a lot of potholes, rocky sections, and wildlife to dodge. It's common to see many Kangaroos in this area and the occasional wild boar, so keep your eyes peeled.

At the 23km mark you will pass the Boyd River Campground - continue on for another 7km to the end of the road and you have arrived at your destination. 

The Walk

If you plan on catching the sunrise here - highly recommended and well worth it - you will need to begin your walk from the trailhead at least 30mins prior to sunrise.

Walk 100m down form the trailhead and take the first right towards the Plateau Walk. From here you will see the walls across the valley - follow the trail and take a left at the Dance Floor Cave and head up the steps. You are now on Kanangra Walls. Follow the trail along for 5-10 mins till you reach an open rocky area - turn left here and be careful not to destroy any of the plant life as you navigate towards the cliff edge.

Looking directly across you will see Thurat Walls, an interesting set of spires. Looking to your right in the distance you will see Mount Cloudmaker.
