Distance: 11km. Elevation Gain: ~1000m. Time: 6-8 hours. Day hike that provides amazing views over Tasmania's South-West National Park. Opportunity to extend into a multiple day trip.
The hike to the summit of Mount Eliza is one of the most physically tough but rewarding day hikes in the region. From the summit, an amazing view over the wilderness that surrounds you is unlike any that can be found outside of Southwest National Park.
The trail begins by leading you along flat marsh for a short period, but from there it is all uphill. Following the western ridgeline, the trail is well constructed and clear to follow for the first 4km, where you gain 700m in elevation and finish at the High Camp Hut. There is a pit toilet here and the hut can be used for overnight camping.
From here, the trail turns into a scramble, as rock cairns help you navigate your way through the boulder-field that leads you to the summit. The 300m of elevation gained in this slope will leave you puffing, however the view at the top will soon have you appreciating your effort.
