Hike Pigeonhouse Mountain (Didthul)

From Milton, turn off Princes Highway, following signs marked ‘Pigeon House’ (this will take you along Croobyar Road, Woodstock Road and Yadboro Road). The walk begins in the picnic area off Yadboro Road.Best to walk in dry weather as trail is steep and there are ladders to climb, and the road to the carpark may become boggy.The walk takes about 4 hours to go out-and-back, because even though it's short in distance there is 800m elevation gain!To start, there is a steep climb for 800m from the carpark to the first cliff line and the National Park boundary, where the track follows a steep spur through a forest of Black Ash. There is then a flat walk of 1km from the top of the first cliff line to where the sandy track starts to climb again, and here many wildflowers can be seen in spring and summer. Another climb for 500m takes us to the famous ladders. Towards the top of this stage a wet forest grows where the Pigeon House cliff line provides shelter from the sun. Lyrebirds may be seen or heard here. The summit of Pigeon House Mountain (Geo coordinates: 35° 20' 57" S, 150° 15' 54" E) is reached by climbing a series of steel ladders attached to the cliff face. This peak is the southern most remnant of a once extensive sandstone plateau stretching north towards the Shoalhaven River. Have a picnic up the top on the rocks before starting the descent back to your car.
