About this place

Added by Jenna Mulligan

A meandering, country-side trail gives the hiker a taste of the Fuschl Am See district before a steep, wooded climb to the summit.

From Salzburg, find transportation to the lakeside town of Fuschl am See. You can catch Bus 150 from the main railway station, and pay roughly 5 euros for a 30 minute ride to the town. This bus lets you off on the small highway, and you'll see you route to descend into town.

Walk to the north end of the small village, where you will find a meandering dirt path and signs to Mt Schober and Bergruine Wartenfells, which translates to the Wartenfells ruins.

The path can be taken in multiple directions, or as an out-and-back; weather and trail conditions should guide this decision. If you take the loop counter-clockwise, the path up to Frauenkopf mountain will be sharp and a bit hazardous, with sections of rockfall and loose trail. However, this section is less steep than the clockwise ascent to Mt. Schober. This western side of the path has multiple chain assisted climbs and ladders, which offers added security and footing, but can be difficult for some to navigate.

If proceeding in a clockwise direction, you'll hike first to the Wartenfell castle ruins, which are at a low-point on the ridge line and offer views to the opposite valley, looking away from Fuschl. You can enter and explore the castle, before proceeding up into the heavily forested and steeper section of trail.

The last mile of the ascent is rocky, semi-exposed, and difficult, but is a rewarding challenge. The summit is marked by a large iron cross with various prayer flags.

In foggy or poor weather conditions, I recommend climbing up to Mt Schober in a clockwise manner, and then returning on the same path, skipping the Frauenkopf vista. The section between Schober and Frauenkopf is more exposed and there is more opportunity to lose the trail.
