No one really knows why the people from the Sonoran Desert built this mud skyscraper. Some scientists believe it was built as a astronomical observatory. What ever the reason, the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument is a engineering marvel that was built in the 1300's. People have been so puzzled and inspired by the ruins that this was the first prehistoric site protected by the U.S. Government in 1892. If it was not for the massive umbrella over the ruins, they would have melted hundreds of years ago.
Today there is a interpretive path that will navigate between the "Big House" and the out layered farming ruins. Tours led by rangers occur every hour and due to safety concerns you cannot tour the individual 4 floors of this building.
There is easy parking, and picnic areas on site. A Visitor Center also has flush toilets. There is also food nearby in the towns of Coolidge and Casa Grande, AZ.
