About this place

Added by Outbound

You will park off I-17 at Forest Road 9006, which is approximately 1 mile from Sunset Point Rest Area. To find Forest Road 9006, you will spot an old ranching structure and a tall windmill. Park at the gate and get ready to explore the Richinbar Mine!

The forest road will continue and bend slightly as you pass the old ranching station. As you start to descend into the Agua Fria Canyon, you will reach a T- intersection which stops at the remains of an old building foundation.

Head South where you will come across the Zyke mine shaft which is approximately 500 feet deep. It is important that you do not attempt to go near this mine as it is unsafe, so enjoy it from afar and be safe. As you continue further, you will note the old stamp mill foundation as tailings stream down the mountainside.

A single rock structure stands in the distance, which looks very much like an old chimney. In fact, it is the pillar that once supported the roof of the Manager's Quarters. To the west of this structure, two main Cyanide Tanks reside which waste product has formed a dam-like structure within the canyon.

Now, adventure Northward to an area where you can visualize what appears to be a pile of stacked boulders. This cluster of rocks is decorated with ancient Hohokam Petroglyphs.

Upon completion of your hike, return the way you entered and be sure to keep a lookout for herds of Pronghorn galloping across the meadows!
