Munds Mountain

Munds Mt. is the highpoint due east of the town of Sedona, but due to its forested summit and trailhead accessibility limited to 4WD vehicles, it gets far less interest than hikes like Cathedral Rock, Wilson Mountain, or Fay Canyon yet has fantastic views of the town of Sedona and the surrounding cliffs and canyons.

The most direct route is from the popular 4WD touring route, Schnebly Hill Road. About a quarter mile from the Schnebly Hill Vista is a unmaintained turnoff often marked as Schnebly Hill on most maps. This trail may be passable by some 4WD vehicles but most park here and hike up till it intersects with the marked Mundy Mt. Trail staying to the right and following the trail as it roughly follows the cliff edge till it reaches the summit meadow. 

At one point the trail will drop down to the saddle between Schnebly Hill and Mundy Mt. where it intersects with Jacks Canyon Trail. Here the steepest portion of the trail begins, criss-crossing up the northeastern face.

There is not much of a view from the summit though the trail does continue on for another mile to a breathtaking overlook across the entire Sedona area.

As an alternative route for those without 4WD vehicles, you can take Schnebly Hill Road from I-17 from the east, parking at the Schnebly Hill Overlook and following Forest Service Road 153A till it intersects with the aforementioned "Schnebly Hill" road for about a quarter mile till it connects with the Mundy Mt. trail, adding about a half mile of overall length to the trip but with less elevation gain.

Note that in all seasons regardless of the kind of vehicle if it has rained recently the road may be impassable.
