About this place

Added by Laura Hill

Experience golden aspen and crisp chilly weather on the Inner Basin Trail.

When the golden fall color is at its peak is when this trail (and Locket Meadow camping) is the most popular.  I recommend getting there as early as possible, because parking goes FAST.  And note that the drive up to the trailhead is a bit sketchy as well…

Beginning at Lockett Meadow, the start of this trail is flat and filled with aspen.  As you begin the climb, you’ll encounter row after row of switchbacks, but you won’t mind because it’s so stunning.  The trail connects with Waterline Trail briefly before following a service road into the mountain's now quiet Inner Basin, connecting to the Weatherford Trail on the far side of the basin.

Before turning around to return, the little cabin structure in the middle of the clearing marks a wonderful place to sit and relax. I recommend pausing here before heading back down.

The altitude can kick your butt, so make sure you stop when needed, bring lots of water, and snacks for energy.

I encourage you to call Flagstaff Ranger District with any questions, or if it’s getting late in the year and you want to inquire about conditions.
