Ashurst is a great place to camp with 2 campgrounds (Ashurst Lake and Forked Pine campgrounds) about 150 miles outside of Phoenix and 25 miles south of Flagstaff.
Ashurst Lake is South East of Flagstaff and not too far from Mormon Lake. It's an easy drive that any car can do. There is a a short section of well-maintained dirt road. Keep in mind the current fire regulations for the area as well as the lake's water level if you're panning to launch your boat.
There are 25 sites at Ashurst, and 25 sites at Forked Pine. The campsites come equipped with tables, fire rings, and cooking grills, drinking water, toilets (vault and compost type). The boat ramp is on the west side of the lake.
In the off-season, you can still camp at the campgrounds as long as the road to the campgrounds is open. During that time, the concessionaire will not be present, so there will not be drinking water and only the toilets near the boat launch will be open.
