Explore San Telmo

Buenos Aires surely is one attractive city that calls you to explore it. Among its numerous barrios (neighborhoods), San Telmo stands out being one of the oldest and most emblematic ones. San Telmo is the place where some of the first houses and mansions where built by european immigrants and to this day it still maintains much of its original architecture, with historic mansions, cobbled streets and patios with fountains.

But it is not just history and architecture that you can explore in this barrio. San Telmo is one of the liveliest places, gaining a bohemian fame due to the presence of many musicians and artists. It is the birthplace of tango and surely one of the sites that you may witness live performances in theaters and streets. Also, in San Telmo you will be able to find antique fairs and numerous shops selling antique and contemporary craft items.

You need to be prepared to walk a lot in the area, which is pretty calm and safe. Wander around the streets to dive in the old era style of the neighborhood and explore several converted mansions such as the Pasaje Defensa, once the private home of the Ezeiza family. Multiple lovely cafes, restaurants and bars can be found all around and you should take your time and enjoy them. I would also definitely recommend the Mercado de San Telmo, an indoor covered market mainly offering fruit and vegetables, but also shops and food stores with delicacies. A must is to sit there and enjoy a lunch with local food there!

I added a pin to the plazza Dorrego, which may be considered the center of the San Telmo barrio. Besides being an overly nice square surrounded by shops and lovely cafes and restaurants, it is also the place the hosts the Sunday Feria, a renown street market that takes place every Sunday morning.
