A pleasant hike along the Rio Electrico to Piedra Del Fraile campamento. Route finding is difficult at the beginning but an excellent trail once in the forest.
The trailhead to Piedra Del Fraile is on the right side of Ruta 23 just before the road crosses Rio Electrico. There is signage a few yards into the trail that initially is easy to find. There is a short section where the trail is difficult to find but it is marked with small cairns.
After about one mile, you enter an amazing Lenga forest. The trail is well defined and very scenic. The shades of green are incredible. After 2 miles you come closer to Rio Electrico as the forest opens up to views of Cerro 30 Aniversario. After a total of a little less than 4.5 miles, you will reach Piedra Del Fraile Campsite and Refugio Los Troncos. They have snacks to purchase or you can spend the night. Hiking past this point cost about $10 USD.
This is a good spot to turn back the way you came for a great 9 mile hike. You can continue to Laguna Electrico is you spend the night at Piedra Del Fraile or a long side trip to the laguna.
