Hike to El Chorillo del Salto Waterfall

There are admittedly more dramatic hikes to more impressive locations in the El Chalten area, but most of them require a fairly significant time commitment and some stamina.  At only 4 miles roundtrip with little elevation change, this adventure can be done in a couple of hours if necessary and you won't wear yourself out.  Plus, you'll still see some beautiful sights.  

Take Provincial Route 41 (known as San Martin in the village) north out of El Chalten.  The road will turn into gravel, and runs alongside the Rio de las Vueltas.  The wind coming down the valley can be very strong, so be sure to bring a jacket even if it's warm in town.  After following the road for just under 2 miles, you will come to a small parking lot and the actual El Chorillo del Salto trailhead on your left.  From here, the waterfall is only another 0.25 miles down a mostly flat trail.  When you arrive, take a seat on one of the boulders, pour yourself a mate and reflect on how lucky you are to be in Patagonia.    

NOTE: If you are really pressed for time, it is possible to hire a car in El Chalten to drive you to the trailhead, but you'll get more out of this adventure if you walk the entire way.  Also, if you're in need of something stronger than mate after your hike, stop in to Cerveceria Don Guerra on the way back into town for a pint of fresh brewed local beer!
