Hike this loop trail to get a sampler of Talladega National Forest and the Cheaha Wilderness. It features scenic overlooks, several waterfalls, old-growth forests, gurgling creeks, and large chunks of pale Sylacauga marble.
This 17.7 mile loop trail is actually the combination of three separate trails, the Chinabee Silent Trail, the Skyway Loop Trail, and a piece of the Pinhoti Trail. There are several places on the trail that are near vertical and are demanding, especially on the Pinhoti. Primitive campsites are located throughout, usually in great locations. Parking is available in the Turnipseed Parking area, near the Chinabee Silent Trailhead, or on the Adam's Gap Trailhead.
While hiking clockwise, the trail gains significant elevation quickly after the fist few miles. Stop and take in the view at the overlooks here - they're the best on the loop. The Skyway Loop trail connects the Pinhoti and the Chinabee. It loosely follows a creek and zigzags through valleys. There aren't many significant overlooks or waterfalls on this trail, but the forest here is magnificent - especially the stretching birch trees that tend to stay close to the water. The Chinabee Silent Trail has most of the waterfalls on the trail, including Devil's Den and Cheaha Falls. This trail crosses many streams, so be prepared to get your feet wet if the water is high.
