A nice pine forested hike along Cheaha Creek with great vistas up to a waterfall and a great swimming hole.
Devil's Den Falls is a beautiful waterfall in Cheaha State Park. This is a state park within Talladega National Forest. The easiest access is from Lake Chinnabee which is about one mile round trip from the parking area. It can also be accessed from Turnipseed campground, but that is about six miles. The trail itself has a cool history as it was constructed in 1977 by Boy Scout Troop 29 from the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega. It goes from the lake to Talladega mountain.
The waterfall is about a ten foot drop and has fairly good water flow all year. During wet weather it is quite spectacular. Early spring to fall it can be crowded on the weekends. The waterfall has developed a nice deep pool, about the size of a large swimming pool in someone's backyard, and you can jump in from the rock ledge at the top.
The hike from the parking lot runs along the creek leading up to the falls. It is a little steep in places. Along the way there are some great views up through the valley at the creek, and as you get close you can see the waterfall itself.
Take your grandparents (I am one), and your grandkids, even the dog. Everyone will enjoy it.
