Hike Riley's Canyon

Aproximately two miles Southeast of Woodland, UT on Highway 35 you will come to a small turnout on the North side of the road. It is sufficient in size for a handful of vehicles to park, so that passengers can make their way into Riley's Canyon.

From the turn off, look to the North and you will see where the trail climbs steeply at first. If there has been recent rain, the path could be slick, so use caution. You will come to a gate, make sure that it is secure after passing through, it was not in the best of shape when we were there so care should be taken. 

From there follow the path and the creek. On both sides of the trail you will notice many wildflowers, and a multitude of butterflies and bugs if in the Spring and Summer months. The creek can be heard throughout most of the hike. 

When the trail turns back toward the East after crossing the creek on some stones, look to the North and you will see a gravel area where many others have dug for Red Horned Coral. The area seemed to be well picked over, but the careful observer could locate a few small specimens. (Please check for claims and regulations before rock hounding in any area.)

We continued past and followed the trail for about three miles, until the sun began to wain and we needed to head out so as not to be stuck navigating in the dark. The views were fantastic, although it appears that a good portion of the area has been recently logged off. The wildflowers and successive growth are starting to retake the land. Tall grasses lined the path, and in places you needed to watch your step as to avoid the cattle droppings. 

This trail does continue on much further and can be made into a full day hike, with many picturesque areas to stop for lunch and filter water. There are also multiple mini waterfalls that can be enjoyed as you hike.
